Sharp Family Farms has
been a grower in Ohio for over 160 years. Established in 1853, the farm has grown exceptional quality corn and pumpkins and makes great apple cider and honey. Every fall, the farm holds their annual Sharp Farms Pumpkins and Corn Maze.
Corn mazes are a uniquely American pastime that combines fun for the family with a little education along the way. Getting the chance to get lost in a corn field, or seek out that perfect pumpkin for Halloween is generally all that’s needed to get the kids to buy into an hour or two at the farm, which Sharp Farms Pumpkins and Corn Maze is happy to provide!
Sharps Farm is in Sugar Grove, Ohio, not far from Logan. It is easily accessible from the U.S. 33 in Southeastern Fairfield County and is well worth a visit next fall. As well as a corn maze, Sharps Farm also offers farm tours, open house days, nature trails, parties and a range of other activities.
The site also includes a greenhouse, where you can buy herbs, flowers, vegetables and garden plants grown on site. There is also a very good farm store that sells local products grown on the farm and those from around the area. The store sells local honey, jams, preserves, mustard, jellies, dressings, marinades and great apple cider. It makes for a great alternative to buying from the supermarket.
The maze itself is cut into a 10 acre corn field each fall. It is designed to be a family friendly maze that has a farming or agricultural theme. Along the way, there are opportunities to learn a little about country life and its history, as well as exploring the maze itself. A lot of effort goes into making this a good visit and is well worth the trip.
A neat twist is the question and answer method of navigation. At certain points within the maze, there are questions to be asked. A correct answer will send you on the right path through the maze, while an incorrect answer sends you somewhere else. It adds a jeopardy element to the maze which only adds to the fun. It’s a neat trick, one that works well.
Considering Sharp Farms Pumpkins and Corn Maze is a working farm of over 530 acres, the show they put on in the fall is impressive. It’s well run, well-conceived and well worth a couple of hours of your time. Anything that combines fun with education is worth a visit if you’re in or around Hocking Hills and Southwestern Ohio.
